Truist Securities believes that Meta is gaining an early advantage in the emerging AI Agent market, but that advantage stems mainly from its massive consumer user base and advertising ecosystem rather than from the underlying model capabilities themselves. By contrast, OpenAI and Google may be stronger in capabilities such as open-ended reasoning, but they are taking a different route from Meta in terms of product positioning and distribution approach.
Meta's Muse and OpenAI's newly launched Dots are entering the market from two different directions. Muse targets ordinary consumers first and has begun expanding toward small businesses; Dots initially leans more toward developers and heavy users. Both products are AI Agents capable of running continuously, able to use a computer, memory, and connected applications to execute tasks autonomously.
Truist believes Meta's biggest advantage is distribution capability. Muse can plug directly into platforms with existing massive user bases such as Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, while also connecting to business tools including Shopify, QuickBooks, Stripe, Canva, and Slack. For small businesses, this means Muse can build workflows directly around the software they already use, without requiring users to migrate to an entirely new platform.
Muse for Small Business can currently analyze sales and marketing performance, draft marketing campaigns, review expenses, and filter important messages. Actions involving formal publishing, sending messages, or incurring spending still require approval from the business owner.
Truist believes that Muse's greatest long-term commercial value may not come from subscription revenue, but more likely from driving growth in Meta's advertising spending. If Muse can help small and medium-sized businesses more easily analyze operating data, create ads, and optimize marketing campaigns, it could further lower the barrier for these businesses to use Meta's advertising system, ultimately converting the AI Agent into incremental business for Facebook and Instagram advertising. This is also one of the most obvious business model differences between Muse and Dots. Meta appears to be using AI Agents to strengthen its existing consumer and advertising ecosystem rather than building a standalone new product centered on subscription fees.
OpenAI's Dots places more emphasis on continuous operation and complex task execution. Dots has its own cloud computer, browser, and connected apps, and is positioned more strongly in enterprise environments, including integration with Slack, Teams, and Microsoft's security systems. Therefore, Truist believes Dots leans more toward developers, heavy users, and enterprise customers, while Muse clearly takes a consumer-first path and rapidly expands user coverage through a relatively generous free tier.
Looking at early usage, Muse has already recorded about 2.8 million downloads. Truist believes this shows that Meta's existing social product system is giving Muse an obvious cold-start advantage. However, the firm also emphasizes that both products are still at a very early stage. Muse has only been live for a few weeks, and Dots has just been launched, so it is not yet sufficient to judge the final competitive landscape based on download numbers or initial usage.
Truist maintains a "Buy" rating on Meta and a price target of $763. Its core judgment is that early competition in the AI Agent market may not be determined purely by model capability; distribution channels, user base, and existing commercialization systems are equally important. Meta's strongest advantage currently lies in consumer scale and the advertising ecosystem, while OpenAI's advantages are more concentrated in open-ended reasoning, complex tasks, and enterprise-level use cases. Therefore, what is truly worth watching between Muse and Dots is not just "who is smarter," but which of the two AI Agent routes can reach scale faster: Meta is trying to embed Agents into its existing social and commercial ecosystem, while OpenAI looks more like it is building a general-purpose work platform for professional users and enterprises.
