Shanghai Fruit Prices Rebound After National Day Holiday as Seasonal Supply Shifts

Shanghai's fruit market has seen a short-term price rebound after the National Day holiday consumption peak came to an end, with the market currently sitting in a transition window between summer and autumn fruit varieties.

According to market monitoring by the Shanghai Fruit Industry Association, summer fruits such as watermelons and early-maturing grapes are gradually entering the late harvest stage, tightening supply, while late-maturing apples, navel oranges, and Qiuyue pears are still in the early phase of concentrated market arrivals, leaving quality fruit sources relatively scarce. This shift in supply and demand has driven fruit prices to stabilize and recover.

During the holiday period, Shanghai's wholesale markets, supermarkets, and fruit shops absorbed a large volume of fresh fruit inventory. After the holiday, wholesalers are set to begin a new round of restocking, and as autumn temperatures drop, storage and long-distance cold-chain logistics costs for fresh fruit have risen, with multiple factors together pushing up trading prices for certain categories.

From a market perspective, prices for late-summer varieties have risen noticeably, while newly listed autumn fruits of good quality are maintaining high price levels. Overall market supply remains sufficient, with no shortages observed.

The Shanghai Fruit Industry Association noted that this is a seasonal short-term price fluctuation. As large volumes of fruit from major production regions nationwide—such as Daozhou navel oranges and late-maturing Fuji apples—arrive in Shanghai in bulk, supply will continue to expand, and the upward momentum in fruit prices is expected to ease, gradually returning to a stable range.

Shanghai's fruit distribution channels continue to rely on a nationwide multi-warehouse layout to ensure a rich variety and stable supply of fresh fruit in the city, meeting residents' daily consumption needs.
