Badaoshao Township: Lotus Root Harvest in Full Swing as Fresh Roots Sell Briskly

At present, the 2,700 mu of lotus roots in Badaoshao Yi Ethnic Township, Qiubei County have entered the harvesting season. Lotus root farmers are smoothly coordinating mud washing, root lifting, root cleaning, and root selling, with fields filled with the joy of a bumper harvest.

In recent days, Zhao Jinyun and his wife, villagers from Baozipo Village Group of Badaoshao Village Committee in Badaoshao Township, have been busy in their own lotus root field. The couple divides the work, with one person washing mud and lifting roots while the other cleans and baskets them. Muddy water reaches above their knees, and baskets beside them are piled with plump white lotus roots, with the joy of harvest written all over their faces. Zhao Jinyun said: "This year we planted 12 mu of lotus roots, and we need to dig 10 mu, leaving 2 mu for seeds. We get up at five or six in the morning to dig, selling what we dig on the spot, and by 11 o'clock the buyers come here to collect."

Badaoshao Township has favorable soil and water conditions in the dam area, producing lotus roots with short segments, tender flesh, and rich starch. Purchasers come directly to the field to buy, with "dig and sell on the spot, wholesale at the field" ensuring no worries about sales. They are dug, weighed, and paid for on the same day, giving local people peace of mind. Many people in villages such as Baozipo, Zhibeishan, and Bailianshan rely on lotus root cultivation for steady income growth, and lotus roots have become the "plump white wealth fruit" for people in the dam area.

Zhu Yongsheng, a villager from Baozipo Village also digging lotus roots in the field, said: "My family has been planting continuously for six or seven years. This year we planted more than 6 mu, and the harvest is good." From the lotus root field in the early morning to loading onto trucks at noon, and then to the market table, a single lotus root connects the livelihood industry chain of "farmers + purchasers + market." Chen Chaolong, a local lotus root purchaser, said: "These past two days we have three trucks coming to Baozipo to collect lotus roots. One truck collects more than 2,000 jin a day. All three trucks go to Wenshan, and the three of us sell in one place."

In recent years, Badaoshao Township has leveraged the resource advantages of the dam area around Puzhehei, taking multiple measures to strengthen the lotus root industry and help farmers steadily increase income, turning a pond of clear water into a "cornucopia" at the doorstep of the people and making the "lotus pond economy" a strong support for rural revitalization. This year, the harvesting season for the township's 2,700 mu of lotus roots can last from now until the first month of next year, with total output expected to reach 5 million kilograms, laying a solid foundation for sustained income growth for local people and high-quality development of rural industries.
