Ford Motor sold fewer vehicles in the third quarter than a year ago, as the phaseout of two of its models offset growth for some of its trucks and large sport-utility-vehicles.
The carmaker on Friday said it sold 509,764 vehicles for the quarter through September, down 6.6% from the year-ago period.
Ford attributed the drop to the phaseout of its Escape and Lincoln Corsair vehicles. Adjusting for those models, Ford's total vehicle sales volume was about flat, it said.
The company said it saw strength with its F-Series, a lineup of trucks that includes the F-150. F-Series sales strengthened with growth of 2.4% in September as production increased, the company said.
Ford earlier this week disclosed a temporary production halt at a plant that makes the F-150 due to a supplier issue, a development that it said dragged on its third-quarter wholesale performance. The company said Friday it expects the financial hit from the issue will be contained within the full-year forecast it provided in July.
The Dearborn, Mich. company also highlighted strength for its large SUVs in the quarter, pointing to demand for its Expedition and Explorer models. Ford said its Bronco also had record third-quarter sales.
In the quarter, overall SUV sales fell 17%. Truck sales ticked up 0.5% while car sales rose 7.5%, Ford said.
