Attorney General Todd Blanche said Friday that the Justice Department would not reopen its criminal investigation of former Fed Chair Jerome Powell regarding the central bank's headquarters renovation, two days after President Trump asked him to study the inspector general's report and determine what to do about the project.
"We're not reopening a criminal investigation into him," Blanche said in an interview with Bloomberg News. He said he was satisfied with the report, but that Powell had not appropriately overseen the renovation.
Blanche said the department could investigate if evidence of criminal wrongdoing emerges from an independent audit of the building costs that the Fed has said it will commission.
