S&P 500 Gets Off to a Strong October Start

During midterm election years, October has been the best month on average for the S&P 500, a Dow Jones Market Data report shows.

The broad stock benchmark has averaged a 3% gain in October during midterm years dating back to 1950. It has seen positive performance in 14 of 19 of those years.

This year, the S&P is off to a strong start, gaining 0.9% over the first two days of October.
