Mitsui Fudosan (TYO:8801) plans to construct a data center inside an unused Kobe tunnel to repurpose old infrastructure and overcome above-ground construction limits, Nikkei Asia reported Tuesday.

The facility will occupy about 3 km of the Suma Belt Conveyor, a tunnel used from 1964 to 2005 to transport soil for artificial island development, the publication said.

Partnering with Kumagai Gumi (TYO:1861) and Getworks, the roughly 17,000-square-meter project will be Japan's first data center built in an underground tunnel, the news daily said.

Mitsui Fudosan did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
